Built India's defining e-commerce company from an apartment and delivered its largest exit — Walmart's 16 billion dollar purchase. Proven Wins reflects Flipkart; Navi is a serious second act but has not reached that scale, so it does not lift the score further. A restrained public communicator by choice.
Scores are editorial judgements on a 0–100 scale, not measured metrics. An em dash means the axis has not been assessed.
About
Co-founded Flipkart in 2007 with Binny Bansal after working as a software engineer at Amazon. Served as chief executive until 2016 and exited following the Walmart acquisition in 2018, cashing out his stake for about a billion dollars. Later founded the financial services group Navi, where he moved from chief executive to executive chairman in February 2025.
An IIT Delhi computer science graduate, he worked briefly at Techspan and then Amazon before leaving with colleague Binny Bansal — no relation, despite the shared surname — to sell books online in 2007. He led Flipkart as chief executive through its expansion into electronics, fashion and logistics, handed the role to Binny in 2016, and exited entirely when Walmart acquired control in 2018. He has since built Navi, a financial services group offering lending, insurance and mutual funds, and is an active investor in Indian startups.
