About
Upasana Taku co-founded MobiKwik, the Gurugram digital payments and financial services company, with her husband Bipin Preet Singh in 2009, and serves as its executive director and chief financial officer. Raised in a Kashmiri Pandit family in Gujarat, she took a bachelor's in industrial engineering from REC Jalandhar and earned a master's in management science and engineering from Stanford University. She then worked in the United States, in the product team of HSBC's auto-finance division in San Diego and as a product manager at PayPal in San Jose across financial services, global payments and risk. She gave up that career and her green card to return to India, and by February 2010 was working full-time on MobiKwik, which began as a wallet for mobile recharges. She was honoured by the President of India in 2018 as the first woman to lead a payments company in the country. MobiKwik listed on the NSE and BSE in December 2024. In September 2026 she bought 1.07 lakh MobiKwik shares for about ₹2.12 crore, taking her holding to 10.24%.
Taku chaired MobiKwik's board until December 2025, when independent director and former diplomat Navdeep Singh Suri succeeded her as chairperson; she remained executive director and CFO, while Singh is managing director and CEO. Her September 2026 share purchases were made on 28 and 29 September in two lots of 52,000 and 55,000 shares on the NSE, lifting her holding to 80,64,670 shares. In the filing she said she had bought 2,94,177 shares since the IPO, including 1,87,177 in December 2025. The founders started MobiKwik with savings of ₹20-40 lakh, she has said.
