One97 Communications began in 2000 as a mobile value-added services business; Paytm launched in 2010 as a prepaid recharge platform before adding a wallet, UPI payments and merchant devices. Wallet adoption accelerated sharply after the November 2016 demonetisation. Backed by Ant Group and SoftBank, its November 2021 IPO raised about 18,300 crore rupees — then the largest in Indian history — and the stock fell steeply on debut. In January 2024 the Reserve Bank barred Paytm Payments Bank from accepting fresh deposits, forcing the company to move its payments partnerships to other banks.
