About
C J George (Chenayappillil John George) is the founder of Geojit Financial Services, the Kochi-based broking and investment services company, and its executive chairman from 1 October 2026. Born in Pothanikkad, near Ernakulam in Kerala, he worked as an analyst with Batliwala and Karani Securities while studying law part-time in Delhi, then left his studies to join the firm's Cochin office. In 1987 he set up C J George and Co in Cochin with Ranajit Kanjilal, a B&K client; the firm was renamed Geojit, a blend of the two partners' names, and became his sole proprietorship after Kanjilal left in the early 1990s. Under George it became a public limited company in 1994, brought in the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation as a co-promoter, went public in 1995, launched online trading in 2000 and was among the first to offer commodity futures in pepper, cardamom and bullion. He led Geojit as chairman and managing director until 30 September 2026, when the board's succession plan made him executive chairman and named his son Jones George managing director.
Outside Geojit, Wikipedia lists George as a director of V-Guard Industries and Aster DM Healthcare, a former director of Federal Bank, a managing committee member of the industry body ASSOCHAM and a charter member of the Financial Planning Standards Board India. Geojit's other shareholders have included BNP Paribas and investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, who took a stake in 2005. The board approved the 2026 leadership change on 22 July 2026 on the recommendation of its nomination and remuneration committee. George is married to Shiny George and the couple have two sons.
